. john boehner is like we've got to look at things. it's not going to happen overnight. >> it seems like a couple of weeks ago but it was about a week ago when the house of representatives voted on boehner's plan b which would have set the threshold at $1 million. now they're going to vote on it at $450,000. you've got to figure a lot of republicans aren't going to go along. >> what exactly happened? we're going to go over this in detail with chad who saw the play-by-play and was e-mailing us the play-by-play. mitch mcconnell called up -- bypassed senator reid who never got back to him on saturday and said can i speak to the vice president, joe biden? we're used to cutting deals together. like it or not, these are the two that hammered it out. they put it together. when it was all said and done, this is what joe biden had to say about how this deal actually came to fruition. >> what was said there was kind of hard to hear. what was your selling point? biden said: me. it's interesting, the senators, the democrats all got together late yesterday, and joe biden went in, and his pitch t

this they want the public to look at this. somehows speaker john boehner is under no obligation to bring this up. they could bring it up and possibly change it and ping pong it back to the senate. this is far from over. there's a lot to do here. the one plus on this side might be the fact there is so much in this bill doug was talking about it keeps milk prices low the dodoc fix physicians who see medicaid patients and things. there are a lot of things there a lot of members are for. i have to caution everyone there was a vote december of last year on renewing the payroll tax cut which passed overwhelmingly again a very similar margin in the senate. 89 votes in that particular bill and they move it had over to the house and john boehner and house republicans had a conference call on a saturday afternoon and they got their head handed out. everybody was mystified by this. they said how can a senate possibly pass a bill with such an overwhelmingly margin and send it over to the house and have such trouble. >>> the whole social security tax issue is a big sort of hidden tax. right now

shouldn't raise them at all but can't do more than john boehner's plan b, and didn't go to a vote. >> one for million. icle >> it would raise you billion in revenue. they were not for it in the first place but maybe get something through if obama willing to cut. obama administration said if you pass it in the house and september passed it, obama would veto it anyway. they are so far apart. this i am flying back from hawaii and see if i can bring them back together. they are far apart as they have been. >> kelly: why are they having the meeting? because of the talk and rhetoric is ramping up and the agreement is going down. i mean, for example, senate majority leader harry reid is name calling and calling john boehner a dictator . this is what he had to say. >> the american people i don't think the house representative is operating without the house of representative. it is being operated with a dictatorship of the speaker not allowing the vast majority of the house and representatives to get what they want. >> that sounds ridiculous f. it was a dictatorship boehner would have gotten that

they have a deal. my bet it's all political theater. >> they blame house republicans since john boehner hasn't been able to get them a deal to raise taxes. the name calling is getting ugly. >> american people don't understand the house of representative is operating without the house of representatives. it is being operated with a dictatorship of the speaker not allowing the vast majority of the council to representatives to get what they want. >>> and while it's true that the senate controlled democrats is working this week, they are not working on fiscal cliff matters and the house won't even be back to work sunday two-days before the end of year deadline. theoretically these guys have time to get something done here. it is also possible at today's meeting at the white house may be simply window dressing. >> see what happens ten hours from now. time now to take a look at who is talking and this morning we are hearing from charles krauthammer. >> last night on hannity he was talking about the looming fiscal cliff and the president's approach to negotiations. krauthammer giving

all of this president obama and republican house speaker john boehner. as far as we know the two of them have not really been talking. the lines of communication are theoretically open but both of them seem to be standing their ground. one other factor to consider here is something we just heard from the treasury secretary tim geithner telling us we are rapidly approaching the nation's debt ceiling. we could hit it by the end of the year. there are accounting tricks we can use to prevent us from hitting that by the end of the month. it shows you how complicated this is getting. one other factor that was going to become part of the grand bargain if we ever reach grand bargain. right now they could be looking for a stopgap measure. >> we have heard that before a stopgap measure. thank you very much. appreciate it. >>> you hear those two key words there accounting gimmicks. let's talk about stories you can bank on this morning. lauren simonetti from the fox business network has more on the accounting gimmicks and the statement about the debt ceiling. the treasury is taking steps to cha

. john boehner increase of $1,000, so they're not enormous raises, they are fairly mottdest, right, peter? >> they are fairly modest, it affects not only congress, but the supreme court justices and also includes senior executives in the executive branch. the cost of this, according to the congressional budget office, is going to be about 1 billion dollars a year with this increase for senior executives in government. so, literally, think about this. they're talking about the fiscal cliff, they're talking about raising taxes and cutting spending. the only thing that's been accomplished thus far is to raise spending by about a billion dollars a year. >> dave: i think in particular rubs americans the wrong way when they see this, members of congress average salary, 174,000. average american, $48,000. that's on top of the fact that we see all the time, they take off, these long recesses and oh, by the way not passing bills and on top of this, this was by executive order, the president did this himself. >> yeah, it was done late at night, obviously, not great politics. i'm not quite su

speaker john boehner hit a wall and while they didn't reach a deal yesterday, there was movement on the income level they're willing to protect from tax hikes and other levels. mr. obama, on an interview on "meet the press" was cautiously opt missic. >> i'm confident that one of two things will happen when it comes to the fiscal cliff. one, we'll see an agreement within the next 48 hours in which case middle class taxes will not go up. if that doesn't happen, then democrats in the senate will put a bill on the floor of the senate and republican also have to decide if they're going to block it. >> biden and mcconnell are said to be only about $100,000 apart on where the bush era tax cuts would expire with the republican pushing for $550,000 a year. democrats offering a 450,000. biden stowed have given up his push to raise the estate tax. democrats are trying to delay spending cuts until 2015 and republicans are demanding more spending cuts to offset extended unemployment benefits and farm subsidies. lot of ground to make up. but mcconnell says his decision to reach out to biden was a goo

the people who sent us here. >> speaker of the house, john boehner, is expected to come back to washington at any time as well. before he went back to ohio and president obama went to hawaii, they were believed to be about $400 billion apart in spending cuts and tax increases. speaker boehner even had to withdraw the so-called plan b measure in the house that would raise taxes on millionaires, but keep them low for everyone else because there just wasn't enough gop support in the house. but even after all that, the speaker says this weekend he thought lawmakers could still steer us away from the fiscal cliff. >> of course, hope springs eternal. and i know we have it in us to come together and do the right thing. we'll continue to work with our colleagues and the congress and the white house on a plan that forgets families and businesses. >> we don't know if president obama will make it back to hawaii to finish his family vacation. we're told it all depends how negotiations go. back to you. >> gretchen: peter doocy live in d.c thanks very much. >> rick: are you ready for your tax

at the table and get something done. do you blame only president obama or are you also blaming john boehner to a certain extent? >> i guess you have to blame everybody. i didn't like the fact that they went in for a vote the other day and didn't have the vote. that didn't look good for anybody. and it certainly didn't look good for the republicans. the democrats loved it. but that was a momentary -- that was just a time in place. look, the republicans are sitting there with a nuclear weapon, so to speak. they have debt ceiling coming up. they can use that as part of this negotiation. and they should. and they shouldn't settle unless the deal is a great deal for this country. not for the republicans or democrats. unless it's a great deal for the country. we have to straighten this country out. this country is a mess. and we have no leadership and we have to straighten it out now and stop talking. whether they go on vacation or not, not good. sends a bad signal, but we have to straighten this country out and shouldn't do plan b -- they're all temporary. we should do the final plan or
